The 3 Currencies of Mastery: How to Align Your Time, Energy, and Effort for Unstoppable Growth
If I followed you around for a week, I wouldn't need to ask about your goals. I could tell you exactly what you truly care about by looking at your calendar, your energy levels, and where you dig in when things get tough.
You see, improvement in any area of life—fitness, relationships, business—is not a mystery. It's brutally predictable. It all boils down to how you spend three fundamental currencies: Time, Energy, and Effort.
Most people don't fail because they don't know how. They fail because one of these currencies is being consistently misspent. In this solo episode, I’m breaking down this framework to give you a mirror to hold up to your own life. What you see might just change everything.
The Foundation: Time is the Quantity of Your Intention
Let's start with the non-negotiable: time. This is the foundation upon which everything is built. Time is the quantity of your intention.
You cannot shortcut the reps. If you want to get better at anything, you must put the time in. You will never improve a skill you never practice, a body you never train, or a relationship you never nurture.
As I said in the episode,Â
"If you trained for 15 minutes every single day, that's going to far and away beat going to the gym or training... for only two hours, one time per week."
Time doesn't lie. Your schedule is a perfect mirror of your priorities.
Your Challenge:
I want you to track your time. This week, take the easy version and note what you're doing every hour. Set an alarm if you have to. For a deeper audit, track every 30 or even 15 minutes. I promise you, looking back at that log after seven days will be a shocking revelation of where your most precious resource is truly going.
The Multiplier: Energy is the Quality of Your Attention
Now, let's talk about the force that multiplies your time: energy. If time is the quantity, energy is the quality of your attention.
You can have all the time in the world, but if you're burned out, distracted, sleep-deprived, and emotionally drained, you won't have the fuel to show up effectively. Your output will be a fraction of what it could be.
Improvement requires you to be recovered. It demands focus and a spark of enthusiasm. Your energy is directly affected by your foundational habits:
How are you sleeping?
What food are you using to nourish your body?
Where is your mindset?
Is your environment draining you or fueling you?
"You can't pour from an empty tank,"Â and yet, so many of us are trying to drive our way to success while running on fumes. Replenishing your energy isn't laziness; it's essential maintenance for greatness.
The Catalyst: Effort is the Proof of Your Belief
Finally, we have the catalyst that pulls it all together: effort. Effort is intensity and consistency combined.
This is where we must kill the myth of perfection. So many people are paralyzed by the need to be perfect. Let me be direct:Â
"There was one perfect human on this earth and he died on the cross to save us from our sins."
We can strive to be like Jesus, but we will fall short. Perfection is a prison. Instead, strive for persistence.
Think about it: How many times have you written your name? Thousands. Is it perfect? Does it look exactly the same, like a computer font, every single time? No. So, if you can't even perfect your own signature after a lifetime of practice, why would you expect perfection in anything else?
The effort gap is what separates the dreamers from the doers.Â
"Someone training at 70% effort for 10 years is going to far and away beat that person that does 110% for only two weeks."
Effort is the discipline to keep showing up long after the initial motivation has faded. It is the proof of what you truly believe is possible.
The Mastery Triangle: How Time, Energy, and Effort Work Together
Visualize these three currencies as a triangle. If any one side is weak, the entire structure collapses.
Time without Energy:Â You'll be burnt out, wasting hours, days, and years of your life in a fog of fatigue.
Energy without Time:Â You'll have bursts of inspiration and motivation, but with no foundation for follow-through. It's all talk, no action.
Time and Energy without Effort:Â You'll be a perpetual dabbler, starting strong but fading quickly, never building the momentum that leads to mastery.
"Mastery isn't some mystical thing," I said in the episode. "Mastery really is the alignment of these three things. When these three, time, energy, and effort, support the same goal consistently, that's where you're going to find mastery."
Your Weekly Self-Audit: The Questions That Reveal Everything
To make this practical, you need a system. I want you to make this three-question audit part of your weekly review, every single Sunday.
Where did my time actually go this week? (Be honest. Look at your tracked time.)
What drained my energy this week? (Identify the people, habits, or tasks that are energy vampires.)
Did I put in consistent, focused effort, or was I just dabbling? (This is a crucial mindset check.)
Practical Application: Fitness, Relationships, and Business
Let’s apply this framework to three key areas of life.
Fitness: You do have the time. Everyone has the same 24 hours. The question is allocation. If you have poor energy, fix your sleep. If you lack effort, commit to a shorter, consistent routine instead of sporadic, intense bursts. Improvement responds to investment, not hope.
Relationships: How often do you see couples or families at a restaurant, all on their phones? Real connection requires the intentional investment of all three currencies. Put the phones down. Be present. As Jordan Peterson suggests, aim for 90 minutes of real, task-free conversation with your partner per week. That’s an investment that pays a lifetime of dividends.
Career & Business: Here, "effort is following through on the ideas long after the motivation fails." Energy is the creativity and problem-solving you bring to the table. Time is the dedicated hours for deep work. Stop jumping on every new "shiny object" and have the discipline to see your core initiatives through.
Every result in your life right now is a direct reflection of how you've spent these three currencies. If you have the wrong results, it's not a sign that you're broken. It's a sign that your investments are misaligned.
The formula is simple. It’s not magic; it’s math. Reallocate your time. Recharge your energy. Reignite your effort.
Keep making the right deposits, and you will inevitably wake up as the person you've been striving to become.
